2009 Challenge Theme: Spring Into Quilting

Each Quilt Challenge Kit will contain a total of 2 yards of quilt-store quality, 100% cotton fabric.  The Challenge Kits will be available for purchase beginning in January 2008.  Each kit will cost $15.  If additional fabric is desired, it may be purchased for $7.50 per yard, in one yard increments.  (If you would like to purchase extra yardage, please advise Rachael or Debbie, and we will add you to a list. Extra yardage will be available after a majority of the kits have sold.)  Please note that purchasing additional yardage does not change the two entry maximum per kit.  If you would like to enter more than two categories, you must purchase an additional kit.  All kits and additional yardage will be sold first come, first served.

As a participant, you may enter two categories per single kit. The categories are listed below.

1.     Pieced Quilt

2.     Appliquéd Quilt

3.     Quilted Garment

4.     Quilted Item

Rules and Guidelines:

1.     The theme of the Quilt Challenge is Spring Into Quilting.  Your entry should reflect a spring theme, what sprung you into quilting, or the fabrics themselves, keeping with the spring feel.

2.     Quilt front must contain a minimum of 30% of Challenge fabrics.    Both Challenge fabrics must be used on quilt front, and be an integral part of the design.  This rule also applies to Quilted Garments and Quilted Items: The outside of the garment or item must contain approximately 30% of the Challenge fabrics.  Both Challenge fabrics must be used on the outside of the item, and must be an integral part of the design.

3.     Quilt can be any shape, as long as the combined total of all sides is no less than 96” (examples: 24” x 24” or  20” x 28”) and no more than 180” (examples: 45” x 45” or  35” x 55”).

4.     There is no limit to other fabrics or embellishments used.

5.     All quilts must have a 4” sleeve attached to the top for hanging.

6.     All entries must have a label sewn to the back/ inside of your completed Challenge item.  All labels must be covered using basting or safety pins. (Please NO straight pins).

7.     All Quilt entries must be quilted (the only exception being a crazy quilt which may be tied/tacked).

8.     Pieced quilts must be predominantly pieced.

9.     Appliquéd quilts must be predominantly appliqué.

10.   A Quilted Garment is one item of clothing (vest, jacket, etc...)

11.   The Quilted Item category will include purses, dolls, pillows, etc...

12.   All entrants must be members in good standing, which requires that your January 2009 dues be paid.

13.  All entries must be received at the February 10th, 2009 meeting.  Entries will be displayed anonymously at the March 2009 meeting where they will be voted on by all attending LAQ members. We will be voting for our favorite in each of the four categories, as well as a Viewer’s Choice, (our favorite from any category).  Any ties will be settled by a show of hands voting at that time. 2009 Block Challenge

The Theme for our 2009 Quilt Show is “Spring Into Quilting”.  Please keep this in mind when completing your block.  The following guidelines must be followed:

·        When completed, your block must measure 12 ½” square.

·        Your name must be written (in fabric pen/marker) on a seam on the back of the block.

·        Your block must contain at least two of the following colors:  light blue/ baby blue, lavender/ lilac, spring green/ light green.  You may use all three colors if you wish.

·        You must use a white (not beige) background fabric for your block. This may be a white on white, a solid white or white print.

·        You may use any number of fabrics you choose (as long as the above two guidelines are followed) and you may add any embellishments you like.

·        Blocks may be turned in at the monthly meetings beginning in January 2009. Blocks will be displayed at the March 2009 meeting, and voting will be done by the general public at our Quilt Show in March.

·        The winner of the Block Challenge will receive half of the blocks (of their choice), and the remaining blocks will be donated to Charity Quilts.

           Stitches through Time

Karen L. Dever will be available to evaluate your new and antique quilts on March 14 and 15 at the Burlington County College Enterprise Center, Mt. Laurel, NJ.  Karen is an AQS Certified quilt appraiser and a member of PAAQTwho can provide a written insurance appraisal for $40 each or conduct an oral consultation for $20.

Written appraisals are necessary for insurance coverage of antique, vintage and new quilted textiles. Unless you are able to prove otherwise, the insurance claim for a "blanket" is far below what our quilts are generally worth. Quilters are encouraged to protect their investments by having their collections appraised.

To schedule an appraisal call 856-816-6628.
